I’m putting two classics that need no real introduction—both from Nirvana—into listener preferences for this #vinylbattleWednesday (hosted by @vinylwife). ℕ𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕣𝕞𝕚𝕟𝕕 is, of course, completely seminal to grunge, while 𝕀𝕟 𝕌𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕠 is more abrasive, but an excellent and uncompromising follow-up. Do you have a favourite between the two? It’s another #fortyfiveFriday. I’m spinning the limited 50th anniversary 7” mix (2024) of Kraftwerk’s “Autobahn.” Highway driving music, 50+ years on. A seven-year hiatus between albums, followed by a trip to Shangri-La to work with the legendary Rick Rubin, did wonders for The Strokes and their Grammy-winning album, 𝕋𝕙𝕖 ℕ𝕖𝕨 𝔸𝕓𝕟𝕠𝕣𝕞𝕒𝕝. It’s arguably their best album after Is This It. The cover features the 1981 painting Bird on Money by Jean-Michel Basquiat, a tribute to jazz musician Charlie Parker. On my wall, you’ll also notice Basquiat’s Charles the First (1982), which shares a similar colour palette. Before your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper was MF DOOM, he was Zev Love X of #KMD. I picked up this OG pressing of Mr. Hood (1991) when I was in Japan last year. “After Martin Luther King got killed, I wanted to write a song.” Some songs remain urgent—pressing—at once of the past and of this moment: a polemic against the impetus and apparatus of the imperial boomerang; a didactic message against oppression, apartheid, division, and hate; a tearing through the veneer of evil and empire by way of the power of song. Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” is one of those songs. There have been lots of posts this week rightly honouring David Bowie (who was born on January 8 and left the planet on January 10), but today I want to draw attention to what might be my favourite interpretation of his work and one that also serves as a beautiful tribute to the Starman: 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕃𝕚𝕗𝕖 𝔸𝕢𝕦𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕔 𝕊𝕥𝕦𝕕𝕚𝕠 𝕊𝕖𝕤𝕤𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤 𝔽𝕖𝕒𝕥𝕦𝕣𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕊𝕖𝕦 𝕁𝕠𝕣𝕘𝕖. Yep—today and every day. Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C. have been one of my favourite bands of the last five years. Recently, I picked up 𝕊𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕥𝕪 𝔽𝕚𝕒, and it is arguably as good as—maybe even better than—ℝ𝕠𝕞𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕖. Hopping in on this #vinylbattlewednesday to see if others have a favourite between these two bangers.
