Tom Waits and Massive Attack making an anti-fascist/anti-ICE/anti-war song wasn’t on my 2026 bingo card, but damn, what a treasure this blunt, gruffly poetic track is. Back to teaching and needed a little boost this morning, so I went with Caroline Polachek’s 𝔻𝕖𝕤𝕚𝕣𝕖, 𝕀 𝕎𝕒𝕟𝕥 𝕥𝕠 𝕋𝕦𝕣𝕟 𝕀𝕟𝕥𝕠 𝕐𝕠𝕦. It’s an intoxicating listen. Soaking in the last bit of summer (back to work and school tomorrow) with a classic spin from Buena Vista Social Club that takes me back to Cuba. Today, we’re seeing “Weird Al” Yankovic on his Bigger & Weirder tour. My dad took me and my brother to see him in the ’90s, so it feels very full circle to be taking my 9- and 12-year-olds now. 50 years ago, in August 1976, one of the greatest dub albums of all time, 𝕊𝕦𝕡𝕖𝕣 𝔸𝕡𝕖, was released. It was produced and engineered by the one and only Lee “Scratch” Perry and credited to his studio band, the Upsetters. Truly, a a stellar dub album. This copy is an original 1976 UK pressing that I picked up around 17 or so years ago for about $25. A few weeks back, I saw a post that listed artists who consistently release 7/10 albums. Jungle was on the list. Some of the albums and groups didn’t make as much sense, but Jungle does. Sometimes you just want to throw on something that sounds good and doesn’t overly challenge you. The latest from Jungle—𝕊𝕦𝕟𝕤𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕖—has been on repeat. IMO, it’s perfect summer vibes. One of my most anticipated albums, in need of a serious reissue and absent from streaming, has finally arrived on wax. I’m talking about Mos Def / Yasiin Bey / Casa Bey’s 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝔼𝕔𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕔, which is a masterpiece that’s right up there with Black on Both Sides. Sonically and lyrically adventurous, there’s not a dull moment on this one. Anyone else in vinyl land as excited as I am that Aphex Twin’s seminal album 𝔻𝕣𝕦𝕜𝕢𝕤 is being reissued by Warp on wax? I think that’s pretty, pretty, pretty good. My happy place is in the Listening Room with #MyRecordCollection. What are you spinning today? @discogs
