During our weekend exploring, we stopped in an antique shop (@highwayantiquebarn) where I found a pretty nice 1969 OG copy of The Howlin' Wolf Album for a good price. The cover is sparse with text on a white background and a bold marketing approach regarding Wolf’s own distate of the recordings. I think this is a fun listen and an engaging fusion of blues with psychedelic rock. On a track like “Evil,” you can hear the influence on artists like Tom Waits. Certainly not Wolf’s best album by any stretch, but also not a novelty record. #howlinwolf #thehowlinwolfalbum #tomwaits #klipschheresyiv #blues #psychedelicrock
I meant to post this one on Miles’s birthday a few days back, but it’s been a busy week. Miles Davis’s iconic On The Corner recently turned 50 and with each decade the album becomes more influential. I only picked up a handful of RSD releases this year, and I’m glad one of them is more space age funk rarities from On The Corner. Last night I listened to the reissue of The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby on #thirdmanrecords. I thought it sounded great and it is a rewarding listen for those into spiritual jazz or adventurous music. On this record Ashby also plays the Japanese musical instrument, the koto, effortlessly incorporating another instrument into jazz. #dorothyashby #therubaiyatofdorothyashby #jazz #harp #koto
On Saturdays the plants get watered. My wife (@simple.soulful.living) has many plant babies and this isn’t even all of them. I would need a much longer reel for that. In the 1970s a book came out called The Secret Life of Plants. The science in the book was rather specious, claiming that plants hear our prayers, can detect lies, and that they can predict natural disasters and receive signals from distant galaxies. Bogus perhaps, but many people bought the book and have been nurturing house plants since. One of the wildest claims was that plants really “dug” music. Along comes Moog and synth composer Mort Garson with his pioneering 1976 work, Plantasia: warm earth music for plants… and the people who love them. The music, including tracks like “Symphony for a Spider Plant,” “Ode to an African Violet,” and the title track, “Plantasia” are quite stunning and they make me feel happy.
