Classic. #somethinelse #cannonballadderley #milesdavis #jazz
Listening to this bonafide classic with this BIG KID who has no fear of new music. That said, she definitely prefers the Trolls soundtrack, but exposure is important. #talkingheads #fearofmusic #djellabella
Now playing: Gil Evans, New Bottle, Old Wine (Tone Poet Series reissue). #gilevans #newbottleoldwine #tonepoet #jazz
I was happy to grab the #RSD reissue of Max Roach’s We Insist! - Freedom Now Suite. It’s a quiet sounding pressing on clear vinyl. There are a lot of political jazz records—a somewhat recent example being Wadada Leo Smith’s Ten Freedom Summers (2012)—but a major landmark album is the 1961 Civil Rights-focused album, We Insist!: Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite. The standout—for me and many—on the album is “Triptych: Prayer, Protest, and Peace,” which is an improvised collaboration between Roach on drums and Abbey Lincoln on vocals. Abbey Lincoln’s voice is remarkable, and the wordless performance feels visceral. The song climaxes with Lincoln’s screams and cries, as she traces the parallels between the African American experience and slavery and apartheid in South Africa. If you have never heard it, be prepared as it is a fairly intense, but essential listen. #maxroach #freedomnowsuite #weinsist #jazz #abbeylincoln #improvisation #rsd2022
Now playing, Gang Starr, Step in the Arena. #gangstarr #stepinthearena #hiphop
Starting my weekend off proper: DILLA TIME with some breakfast out. #dillatime #jaydee #dilla
