Are you excited about a new album from Boards of Canada tomorrow? It’s the first album from the pioneering duo in 13 years. In anticipation, I’m spinning 𝕘𝕖𝕠𝕘𝕒𝕕𝕕𝕚 today. Atmosphere’s 𝕐𝕠𝕦 ℂ𝕒𝕟’𝕥 𝕀𝕞𝕒𝕘𝕚𝕟𝕖 ℍ𝕠𝕨 𝕄𝕦𝕔𝕙 𝔽𝕦𝕟 𝕎𝕖’𝕣𝕖 ℍ𝕒𝕧𝕚𝕟𝕘 might be the duo’s funnest record. Back in 2005, I played the CD all the time and saw them on tour. Over 20 years later, I think it’s easily one of their best offerings, with the lyrics and beats on point. As far as emo rap goes, they’re the champions. Have you heard this one? “Jazz is love” Sunday trance: Nala Sinephro, 𝕊𝕡𝕒𝕔𝕖 𝟙.𝟠. What a beautiful, meditative, spacey listen. This and her follow-up, Endlessness, are essential listening. “TIME.” This #TapeThemeThursday, I’ve got Funkadelic’s #FreeYourMindAndYourAssWillFollow on deck. And, man, this one is a trip. Gotta love the distorted riffs, electro-fuzz, aggressive stereo panning, and the way the album teeters between psychedelic experimentation and mental, bodily, and sexual liberation. Do you know this one? Happy to finally have Gap Mangione’s 𝔻𝕚𝕒𝕟𝕒 𝕚𝕟 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝔸𝕦𝕥𝕦𝕞𝕟 𝕎𝕚𝕟𝕕 on vinyl. It’s a highly sought-after funky jazz album by crate-diggers and has been sampled by many, including Madlib, J Dilla, and A Tribe Called Quest. Thanks to the fine folks @bewithrecords for making this happen. 33 years ago Guru released 𝕁𝕒𝕫𝕫𝕞𝕒𝕥𝕒𝕫𝕫 (the first in a series of four). It was a perfect blend of jazz and hip hop, bringing in jazz musicians and collaborators like N’Dea Davenport, Branford Marsalis, Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Lonnie Liston Smith, MC Solaar, Chaka Khan, and others. Today, 𝕄𝕦𝕝𝕙𝕠𝕝𝕝𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝔻𝕣𝕚𝕧𝕖 turns 25 (Cannes release).
