DJ Techné, “Devil’s Gonna Get You” Video

In time for Halloween, I’ve made a quick promo-video for “Devil’s Gonna Get You”: a remix of Robert Johnson’s “Me and the Devil.” Check it out! Thanks to Inke Goes (www.inekegoes.nl) for allowing me to use her art for the video.

From Dedications II (and dedicated to Bessie Smith & Robert Johnson).

I was super stoked to pick up the Cuban 45 box set curated by the legendary DJ Koco aka Shimokita. It’s a Record Store Day exclusive released by Mr. Bongo, and I’m currently enjoying this heavy selection of deep grooves. 🙌 🇨🇺 I AM AN INSTRUMENT. Starting my Sunday with the spiritual masterpiece 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝔼𝕝𝕖𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕥𝕤 by Joe Henderson (reissued by @jazzdispensary). The album features Alice Coltrane. All four tracks offer something great (“Fire,” “Air,” “Water,” and “Earth”), but it’s the closer “Earth” that’s truly sublime and will put you in a trance. Have you heard this one? This #tapethemethursday is all about hip hop. I don’t buy a ton of cassettes, but I’ll snag hip hop tapes in particular when I come across them in the wild, especially that raw ’90s boom bap, which suits the medium really well (a few OGs in slide 2). We all need a little more joy in our lives. The music of Masayoshi Takanaka is one of the keys to unlocking that and a perfect way to start the day. If you’re unfamiliar with his work, his best-of compilation 𝔸𝕝𝕝 𝕠𝕗 𝕄𝕖 (1979) is the perfect place to begin. Whenever my eight-year-old daughter asks for “Golden,” I sometimes throw on this track by the great @missjillscott. Today’s #WHMVinylChallenge (hosted by @vinylettes and @discogs) is about the golden hour, and this song is the perfect way to start or end your day. 🌅 Today’s prompt for #WHMVinylChallenge (curated by @vinylettes with support from @discogs) is focused on women in hip-hop. Women have been present since hip-hop’s early days, from Sylvia Robinson, co-owner of Sugar Hill Records, to MC Sha-Rock, the “mother of the mic.” Others like MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Lauryn Hill built on these legacies, and contemporary artists like M.I.A., Sampa the Great, Rapsody, Noname, Doechii, and Little Simz continue to innovate and take the music in new directions. Today’s #WHMVinylChallenge (hosted by @vinylettes) is focused on jazz, and in collaboration with @discogs, I wanted to draw attention to three trailblazers: Mary Lou Williams, Alice Coltrane, and Dorothy Ashby. The collective impact of these three women is immeasurable. While much of the attention for women in jazz is often placed on singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone (all truly excellent), instrumentalists often take a backseat in public attention. Daft Punk’s 𝔻𝕚𝕤𝕔𝕠𝕧𝕖𝕣𝕪 turns 25 today (released on March 12)! It’s full of smash hits like “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” a commentary on the drive for progress and efficiency, with its robotic refrain echoing the pressures of productivity and enhancement in modern life. Yet over time nearly every track, now playing, “Veridis Quo,” needles its way into that rhythmic part of your soul. Is this album their magnum opus?
