ℙ𝕚𝕟𝕜 𝔽𝕝𝕒𝕘, by punk/post-punk legends Wire, was released this month (the exact date is a bit murky) in 1977. It’s a stunning debut that still sounds innovative and fresh, and it’s giving my Sunday some of the energy it needs. Studio Ghibli Halloween: Kiki, No Face, and Howl (and Calcifer) ready for a magical night! Five years ago today, on Halloween 2020, a singular talent left the planet: the legendary MF DOOM. I’ve shared lots of DOOM’s music over the years but have yet to post his final full studio album, 𝔹𝕠𝕣𝕟 𝕃𝕚𝕜𝕖 𝕋𝕙𝕚𝕤. Over time, this one has really grown on me. The title comes from a Bukowski poem, which appears in part 1 of “CELLZ.” On a day when so many people wear masks, it feels right to honour the greatest to ever wear one. 🙌 For this #TapeThemeThursday, it made sense to go with something on the spooky side of things. My selection is one of the more experiential scores in horror cinema: none other than Tobe Hooper and Wayne Bell’s 1974 sound design for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Making use of non-traditional instruments, it’s a truly frightening score—with or without the visuals. Thanks to @waxworkrecords for finally making this one happen. Perfect music to scare trick-or-treaters this year. If you like Japanese jazz, funk, or rock fusion but don’t know Jiro Inagaki & Soul Media’s 1975 bop 𝔽𝕦𝕟𝕜𝕪 𝕊𝕥𝕦𝕗𝕗, you’re missing out. The album is full of deep grooves—check it out! Thirty years ago, on October 23, 1995, The Smashing Pumpkins released 𝕄𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕠𝕟 ℂ𝕠𝕝𝕝𝕚𝕖 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕀𝕟𝕗𝕚𝕟𝕚𝕥𝕖 𝕊𝕒𝕕𝕟𝕖𝕤𝕤. It was a formative album for me, and during my first year of high school I had the chance to see them live in Vancouver as part of the Infinite Sadness tour (my best friend’s older sister took us). As a concept album representing day and night and capturing the pivotal changes of youth, it deeply resonated with me. There are so many standout tracks, including “Tonight, Tonight,” “Zero,” “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” and “1979,” to name just a few. It’s hard to listen to these Japanese fusion rockers without a big smile on your face. I picked up Eyes of the Mind while in Tokyo earlier this year, and their self-titled album and Mint Jams just arrived from Japan the other day — both are certifiably delightful listens. I’m happy to own these. Do you know the group or have anything from them on wax? 20 years ago today Danger Mouse and MF DOOM (as #DangerDoom) released their collaborative album 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕄𝕠𝕦𝕤𝕖 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕄𝕒𝕤𝕜. I was living in Vancouver at the time and picked up the album from @zulurecords. I still have that OG copy. It’s certainly more zany than MM.. Food or Madvillainy, released the year before, but remains a fun, funky, frenetic, and comic-filled adventure. Do you own or know this one? “The truth and reconciliation committees are coming. The land acknowledgements are coming. The very sorry descendants are coming.”
