I guess if I’m going to play a record today, it might as well be Canada’s band, The Tragically Hip. 𝕐𝕖𝕣 𝔽𝕒𝕧𝕠𝕦𝕣𝕚𝕥𝕖𝕤 (Volume 1) is a collection of some of the Hip’s greatest songs, and to be honest, it was tough to choose a single song to feature. Still not 100% sure I fully dig this (although I like it more and more on each listen), but I appreciate the hell out of it, especially the fact that an instrumental microtonal album by two dudes (Khn and Klek de Poitrine) from Quebec (where I was born, BTW) blew up and, for a moment, broke the internet. On this day, seven years ago, Madlib and Freddie Gibbs released 𝔹𝕒𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕟𝕒, the follow-up to their 2014 album Piñata. A quick little sample flip of Gap Mangione’s “Free Again” on the MPC Sample, with some cuts and sounds from the MicroFreak. Word! “Bring da Ruckus!” “Live for peace A little late to the party, but I finally have the new Boards of Canada album, 𝕀𝕟𝕗𝕖𝕣𝕟𝕠 (Deluxe Edition), on wax. I’ve listened to it several times now, and I think it’s great. It takes their signature sound in new directions, and its spiritual yet unnerving meditation on a world in chaos feels especially apt. “Hey yo, how many know about crate-diggin’?” “Ooh La La.” Spinning one of the great movie soundtracks this morning: Wes Anderson’s ℝ𝕦𝕤𝕙𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖.
